Australia – International Mobile Roaming Standard In Effect From 27 September 2013.

10 October, 2013

The ACMA’s Telecommunications (International Mobile Roaming) Industry Standard 2013 (IMRS) came into operation on 27 September 2013. The IMRS was made by the ACMA in June 2013, and is designed to increase consumer protection measures against excessive international roaming charges.

Under the IMRS, consumers who travel overseas will receive an SMS alert advising them when international roaming starts and further SMS warnings when significantly higher charges apply for using roaming services. Major telcos (Optus, Telstra and Vodafone), will also be required to send a notification SMS to customers outlining pricing information for services when using roaming services.

Small and medium sized telecos are currently developing similar service systems to provide similar information to consumers. The IMRS will fully apply to all resellers by 23 May 2016.
