Research has suggested that Australian users are better protected against malware infections because of internet providers taking part in the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s Australian Internet Security Initiative (“AISI“).

Malware can allow someone to take control of a user’s computer without their knowledge, potentially redirecting them to fraudulent website, recording keystrokes to steal a user’s personal and financial information, and distributing spam.

As part of the initiative, the ACMA provided daily malware reports free to the 130 participants, which included internet service providers and universities.  The research on the initiative found that almost all of the internet providers interviewed used these reports to help identify and assist customers on their networks who were infected with malware.
