Global law firm White & Case LLP is strengthening its global mining capabilities with the hire of John Tivey, who joins the Firm as a partner from Freehills in Melbourne, Australia, where he headed that firm’s mining practice.
John will lead White & Case’s Global Mining and Metals Industry Group from Asia where he will split his time between the Firm’s Singapore and Hong Kong offices.
John brings to White & Case extensive experience in the mining and energy sectors, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. He has significant experience in the mining industry, having worked as in-house counsel for both junior and major mining houses and having advised participants in the industry as a Partner at Freehills for 14 years. Within Asia, he has deal experience in Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines, and has advised Chinese state-owned enterprises on their investments into Australia.
John’s recent experience includes advising Minmetals Resources Limited (HKSX listed) on the CAD$1.33 billion acquisition of Anvil Mining, a company dual listed on the Toronto and Australian Stock Exchanges with copper mining assets in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

John holds Bachelor of Economics, Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws degrees from Monash University in Melbourne.
