15 October, 2012

Herbert Smith Freehills today announced the appointment of Jun Bautista to its international arbitration group.  Qualified in New York and the Philippines, he will join the firm's Hong Kong international arbitration team as a registered foreign lawyer.

Jun, a Filipino national, has extensive experience in the international arbitration arena, both as practitioner and academic.  Before joining Herbert Smith Freehills, he practised as an associate in the Hong Kong office of a leading US firm and at a leading Philippines firm.  He also lectures on international arbitration at the University of the Philippines College of Law.  Jun was a founding member of HK45, the successful arbitration practitioners group in Hong Kong, and was the founding director of the International Centre for Dispute Resolution Singapore, a joint venture between the International Centre for Dispute Resolution and the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, and worked as a clerk for Justice Conchita Carpio Morales of the Philippine Supreme Court.

Following the merger between Herbert Smith and Freehills on 1 October 2012, the newly-merged firm has over 2,800 lawyers based in 20 offices.  Jun will join the largest team of international arbitration, litigation and regulatory specialists in the Asia-Pacific region.

Justin D'Agostino, who heads Herbert Smith Freehills' Greater China arbitration team, commented:

"We are very excited by Jun's arrival.  There are few candidates in the market with his background and experience.  Jun is a true international arbitration specialist, who also brings to the table a wealth of experience in the Philippines and across Asia.  His is an excellent skill-set, and one that we are confident will be a valuable addition to our Asia-Pacific arbitration practice."

Alastair Henderson, who leads the firm's arbitration practice in Singapore, added:

"Jun's arrival will boost our ability to help our clients in the Philippines, a fast-developing market for international and regional companies, particularly in the energy and infrastructure sectors."
