Experience
Stephen Birkett specializes in corporate finance and securities matters, including public offerings, public and private mergers and acquisitions, regulatory compliance, corporate restructurings, and other commercial transactions. His experience includes more than 20 years of handling such matters in Hong Kong and London. Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster, Mr. Birkett served for three years as Senior Director of Corporate Finance with the Securities and Futures Commission in Hong Kong. Before that he was a partner and Head of Corporate Finance in a leading international firm in Hong Kong.
Mr. Birkett is a member of the Hong Kong Government Standing Committee on Company Law Reform. He is recognized as a Leading Individual for Debt & Equity Capital Markets by Asia Pacific Legal 500 2009/2010, and was selected as a recommended lawyer for Company & Corporate Transactions and Mergers & Acquisitions by Global Counsel 3000.
Mr. Birkett is a frequent speaker at conferences on Hong Kong securities legal issues, and has authored chapters on the Hong Kong Takeovers Code and Listing Rules in the popular “Practitioner’s Guide” series. Mr. Birkett received an M.A. degree in modern languages from Cambridge University and is qualified to practice in England and Hong Kong. He is fluent in French and Spanish.
